COVER
ARRANGEMENT

For my assignment two I created a cover of the song "killer" originally written and performed by Kali Uchis. I recorded and edited my cover in Logic Pro X.

INFORMATION

The main reason why i chose to cover "killer" by Kali Uchis is because she is one of my favourite and most listened to artists. I love how she can defy genre and create multiple completely different sounding pieces yet still masterfully craft them to still have her signature Kali Uchis sound. I really didn't want to change up the song too much so the two concepts I chose to focus on the most were structure and tone colour. I also experimented with pitch, duration and texture.

The two biggest changes I made were in the instrumentation and cutting off the outro at the end of the song. Changing these elements allowed me to make the cover my own while still keeping the cover similar enough to the original that it was easily recognisable. The original version has keys, electric guitar, strings, un-pitched percussion, trumpet and vocals. In my arrangement I used electric piano, a pad synth, saxophone, software drums and vocals. I greatly changed the instrumentation which affected the tone colour changing it from full, rich and brassy to more of gentle, warm and natural tone colour.

My cover was recorded in logic where I multi-tracked each instrumental layer to create the finalised piece.  I used my brothers recording microphone to record the vocals and saxophone. and used software instruments and musical typing to record the rest. I didn't use a lot of recording effects because i wanted to keep that natural tone colour.

after recording i altered some of the track levels to balance out the sound and quantised the recordings so it was exactly on the beat to make sure it was accurate.

Creating this cover was great fun and I hope to do something like this again in the near future!
