Tele Ve Ko Koe- Te Vaka

Duration

Some of the note values in the vocal melodies are short however there are a few longer accented notes used to highlight certain lyrics and create melodic movement. This use of short and long notes creates a nice feeling that helps propel the song forward. This is very clearly seen in the bridge where it repeats a phrase of many fast notes concluded by a long note.

The accompaniment uses a variety of note values as well, especially the guitar which has longer chords combined with a riff that uses shorter note values. The percussion section is generally consistently uses only short, syncopated rhythms which helps to create a playful atmosphere.

Dynamics + Expressive Techniques

There is very little dynamic variation throughout the song. It is very consistently at a medium volume with the exception of small dynamic changes to highlight the melody.

There are not many examples of expressive techniques throughout this song other than accents. At some points in the verse the vocal performance sounds almost like it is being spoken. There are a few vocal flourishes and call outs scattered throughout the song which gives it a fuller sound.

Texture

Throughout almost the entirety of this song homophonic texture is used. there is a simple vocal melody with occasional harmony, chordal as well as general accompaniment on the guitar and rhythmic accompaniment in the various percussion instruments. This lack of textural variation makes the song feel simple and fun.

At the beginning of the song, staggered entry is used as the vocals and guitar start before the percussion starts. The main textural movement is seen in the vocal harmony coming in and out of the arrangement.

Tone Colour

The instruments used in this song are vocals, guitar, and Polynesian percussion. The male vocal performers voice is warm and strong which contrasts the slightly more twangy female vocalist and creates a very enjoyable listening experience. The guitar is bright and playful and the percussion is are acute, clear and playful.

The tone colour of the various instruments work together to create a warm, comforting feeling to the song.

Pitch

Tele Ve Ko Koe is in the key of F major. It only uses the I, II, IV, and V chords, with a heavy reliance on just the I and V. Again the simplicity of this aspect of the song helps create a welcoming easy to listen to song.

The melody has a medium sized ranged, there are no big jumps in pitch most of the intervals between notes being relatively small. This leads to a very smooth and predictable melodic contour which makes the song easy and fun to sing and along to.

The song utilises very simple tight melodies which are pleasing to listen to especially with the contrast of deep male lower harmonies and higher harmonies sung by female voices. In my opinion the vocal harmonies utilise pitch in the most interesting and appealing way in this song.

Structure

This song uses a variation of a classic pop structure:

- verse 1

- verse 2

- pre chorus

- chorus

- verse 3

- pre-chorus

- chorus

- bridge 1

- bridge 2

- Extended chorus

- Outro

Although the structure looks complex and unnecessarily convoluted when written down, while you are listening it feels more like a natural flow of rhythm and melody. every section leads very nicely into the next which helps to create unity within the piece. All the sections have a similar sound. The sections that vary the most are bridge 1 and 2 where the instruments are recontextualised to create a different, more triumphant, feeling.
